Year Eight Math Worksheet for Kids – Probability of Simple Events

Year Eight Mathematics Worksheets

Probability is an important concept in math that helps us understand the likelihood of an event happening. It’s the study of random events, and the results that can be predicted based on those events. In simple terms, probability is a number that tells us how likely an event is to happen. In this article, we’ll be looking at the basics of probability and how it relates to simple events.

Probability is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 means that an event is impossible to happen and 1 means that it is certain to happen. For example, the probability of flipping a coin and it landing on heads is 0.5, or 50%. This means that there is a 50/50 chance of the coin landing on heads or tails.

In probability, we use a sample space to represent all the possible outcomes of an event. The sample space is the set of all outcomes that could happen. For example, if we were to roll a dice, the sample space would be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, because these are all the numbers that could appear on the dice when it’s rolled.

The probability of an event happening is calculated by dividing the number of successful outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes in the sample space. For example, if we wanted to find the probability of rolling a 4 on a dice, we would divide the number of 4s in the sample space (1) by the total number of outcomes in the sample space (6). So, the probability of rolling a 4 on a dice would be 1/6.

When working with probability, it’s important to remember that the sum of all the probabilities in the sample space must be equal to 1. This means that if you add up the probability of all the events in the sample space, it must equal 1. For example, if we were to look at the probability of rolling any number on a dice, we would add up the probability of rolling a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. The sum of these probabilities would equal 1.

In conclusion, probability is an important concept in math that helps us understand the likelihood of an event happening. It’s expressed as a number between 0 and 1 and is calculated by dividing the number of successful outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes in the sample space. By understanding probability, kids can learn to make predictions about random events and use the results to make informed decisions.
