Year Eight Math Worksheet for Kids – Performing Operation Involving Scientific Notation

Year Eight Mathematics Worksheets

When dealing with very large or very small numbers in mathematics, scientists use a method called scientific notation. This helps to make calculations much easier and more efficient. It’s a simple concept to understand and is used in a variety of scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, and engineering.

So, what is scientific notation? In scientific notation, a number is written in the form of a coefficient (a number between 1 and 10) multiplied by 10 raised to an exponent (a positive or negative integer). For example, the number 1000 can be written in scientific notation as 1 x 10^3, while the number 0.001 can be written as 1 x 10^-3.

To perform operations with numbers in scientific notation, you must first ensure that the exponents of 10 in both numbers are the same. If they are not, you must adjust them so they match. You can do this by multiplying or dividing both the coefficient and the exponent by 10 until the exponents are the same.

For example, suppose you want to add the numbers 2 x 10^4 and 5 x 10^4. To do this, you must first make sure the exponents are the same, which they are in this case. So, you simply add the coefficients (2 + 5 = 7), and keep the exponent the same (10^4). The answer would be 7 x 10^4.

When multiplying numbers in scientific notation, you simply multiply the coefficients and add the exponents. For example, suppose you want to multiply 2 x 10^3 by 3 x 10^2. You would multiply the coefficients (2 x 3 = 6) and add the exponents (3 + 2 = 5). The answer would be 6 x 10^5.

Dividing numbers in scientific notation is similar to multiplying. You simply divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents. For example, suppose you want to divide 6 x 10^5 by 2 x 10^3. You would divide the coefficients (6 / 2 = 3) and subtract the exponents (5 – 3 = 2). The answer would be 3 x 10^2.

In conclusion, scientific notation is an important concept for kids to learn in mathematics. By understanding and applying scientific notation, kids can perform operations with large or small numbers easily and efficiently, and be well-prepared for future studies in science and engineering.
