A sequence is a database object that generates a series of unique numbers. It is used to automatically generate unique values for a field, such as a primary key, in a database. Sequences are a useful tool for data analysts and business intelligence professionals, as they can be used to ensure that the data in a database is organized in a logical and meaningful way, and that the values in a table are consistent and accurate.

Sequences are created using the CREATE SEQUENCE statement in SQL. The CREATE SEQUENCE statement allows you to specify the starting value, the increment, and the maximum value for the sequence. For example, you can create a sequence that starts at 1 and increments by 1, and has a maximum value of 100.

Once a sequence has been created, it can be used to generate unique numbers by using the NEXT VALUE FOR clause in SQL. For example, you can use the NEXT VALUE FOR clause in an INSERT statement to generate a unique value for a primary key in a table.

Sequences can be used to enforce referential integrity, which means that the values in a table are consistent and accurate. For example, if you have a table with a primary key that is a sequence, you can ensure that the values in that table are unique and that they do not conflict with other values in the same table or in other tables in the database.
