Excel Example for Data Analyst – Count cells that contain five characters

Personal Career & Learning Guide for Data Analyst, Data Engineer and Data Scientist

Excel is a powerful tool for data analysis and it is often used to manage large amounts of data. One of its many features is the ability to count the number of cells that contain a specific number of characters. This is especially useful when you want to know how many cells in your data set contain exactly five characters.

Here’s how you can do this in Excel:

  1. First, select the cells that you want to count.
  2. Next, go to the formula bar and type in “=LEN(A1)=5”. This formula says to count the cells in the range A1 that have a length of 5 characters.
  3. Press “Ctrl + Enter” to apply the formula to all of the cells in the selected range.
  4. Go to the “Home” tab in the ribbon and click on the “Find & Select” button.
  5. From the drop-down menu, select “Go To Special”.
  6. In the “Go To Special” dialog box, select “Formulas” and then click “OK”.
  7. Excel will highlight all of the cells in the selected range that contain formulas.
  8. Go to the “Formulas” tab in the ribbon and click on the “Evaluate Formula” button.
  9. From the drop-down menu, select “Evaluate”.
  10. Repeat step 9 until all of the formulas have been evaluated.
  11. Finally, go to the “Home” tab in the ribbon and click on the “Find & Select” button.
  12. From the drop-down menu, select “Go To Special”.
  13. In the “Go To Special” dialog box, select “Constants” and then click “OK”.
  14. Excel will highlight all of the cells in the selected range that contain values.
  15. The total number of cells that contain exactly five characters is equal to the number of highlighted cells.

That’s it! Now you know how to count cells in Excel that contain exactly five characters.

It’s important to note that you can use this technique to count cells that contain other numbers of characters as well. For example, if you want to count cells that contain six characters, you would simply change the formula in step 2 to “=LEN(A1)=6”.

In conclusion, if you’re a data analyst, Excel is an essential tool for your work. By using the “LEN” and “Evaluate Formula” functions, you can quickly and easily count cells that contain a specific number of characters. This will help you make sense of your data and uncover valuable insights.
